Closet Systems

Closet Decluttering & Organization

Love to shop, but don’t want an overwhelming closet? Here are the systems that I have implemented to make my closet less overwhelming. First, I added a Donation & Consignment bin, if you only have the time to add one system to your closet make sure that it’s this one! When the bin is full, about 2-4 times a year and usually around the time when the seasons are changing, it’s time to declutter your closet!

If there are any items of higher value I make an appointment with our local consignment store, here in Squamish Random & Co Consignment. If there are any items that they will not take, I bring them across the street to our local Squamish thrift shop Pearls Value & Vintage. Although, I might be able to sell some items for more on Marketplace, I’ve decided that for clothes and shoes specifically my time is more valuable and so is yours!

Second, I use the size of my closet as its capacity, for instance if I had double the amount of clothing items, getting ready in the morning and doing laundry would feel way more overwhelming. I have 100 hangers, that’s my max capacity for all my hanging items and one small dresser, that’s my max capacity for intimates and folded items. So if I get to the point where the drawers won’t close anymore it’s time to declutter my closet!

Third, I try my best to get all my laundry done every Sunday so that I start the following week with a fresh start. This schedule usually gets thrown off while traveling or if I’m not feeling well, etc. so I try to be mindful of that. I also added a wall mounted hanging rack to help with clothes that have been worn and might be worn again before washing, for me this is mostly workout clothes. This may be controversial…but I also don’t do my husbands laundry, we both work full time, he wears his clothes and is fully capable.

Here are the items that I took to my last Random & Co Consignment appointment. Including my Hunter rain boots, I loved them and they were in great shape but I've learnt that I love the ankle boot version best, these were just taking up space and so far I have zero regrets!

So, add a bin for donation and consignment items, use the size of your closet as its capacity and create a laundry schedule. Keeping on top of these systems will also help you to be more mindful when shopping.
